VHS Tapes Look Lousy On Plasma HDTV
I just got a new 63" Samsung plasma 1080p HDTV.I played a VHS tape that normally looked good on my old picture tube TV to play in my VCR but it didn't look as good on the plasma screen.Is this normal? Also some DVD's of old movies ("The Wild Bunch" for example)Didn't look all that great either.Will playing those movies on an upcoverting and or upscaling player make any difference?
Well, the quality of VHS was never considered to be all that great, even back in the seventies when it was first invented. Also, some DVDs are just badly mastered and encoded.
Your new TV will show up these defects a lot more readily than your old one, simply because it is a much better (and presumably, much bigger) TV.
If you're currently using something like a RCA or S-Video connection between the DVD player and TV, then getting an upconverting player and hooking it up via HDMI will improve the quality massively.
Failing that, you'll have to gravitate towards Blu-Ray to get the quality you seek.
