TV audio over Surround Sound system?
I'm trying to hook up my new Samsung LED HDTV to play TV broadcast audio and DVD audio over my older (2003) Philips MX3660D /37 DVD suround sound combo. The way I have it set up now is with RCA cables and it works fine for DVD's. I've never been able to get it to work playing TV audio though. What cable do I have to have and what input/output do I have to hook to? The TV has RCA audio "in" jacks, Component "in" jacks, and Video "in". It also has an Optical audio "out" jack. HDMI's too, but they are not applicable with the Philips. The Philips has Optical and Coaxial "outs", RCA audio "in's (auxilary and tv) and a L&R Audio out, Component video out, and RCA video Out.
It wont work.
That Philips system is really a DVD player with cheap attached speakers. It is not a real home-theater system. You gave up the ability to hook things to it for the low price.
You need either a real AV Receiver with spare Optical inputs or a 'better' home theater in a box that includes spare optical inputs.
Then you simply run a Toslink Optical cable from the TV output to the receiver Input.
