A Superlative-Rich Samsung Beam I8520
The recently concluded 2010 Mobile World Congress saw some world's firsts in smartphones and two of them come from the Korean booth Samsung. It had the world's first smartphone running the Bada OS and the world's first Android smartphone with a pico projector running the latest 2.1 Éclair version with TouchWiz UI.
This is the Samsung Beam i8520 that had lingered as the Halo in the online rumor mill for months. Not only does pico projector come with a 6 lumens projection brightness, it can project a clear 50-inch wide image under reasonably dark lighting conditions without much objection. Samsung uses a Texas Instruments DLP chipset with the same Wide-VGA resolution
Samsung has not given a definite timeframe when to expect the Beam but we figure it could in the middle of the year or in autumn. There's also no price advice this early but as a flagship smartphone, you can expect this to have bank-breaking price tag.
Superlative Features
The MWC showcased superlative handsets but few can touch the Beam. It has one of the largest displays at 3.7-inches at wide-VGA resolution and 16 million colors surpassed only by a few with 4-inch displays or over and often with just 256k color support or less. But the Beam's display is also a brilliant energy efficient super AMOLED multitouch capacitive touchscreen with a scratch-resistant surface that is matched only by Samsung's own Bada-run Wave smartphone. You get the usual accelerometer for auto rotate viewing.
Its superlatives do not end there as it features an imaging prowess second to none. You get an 8 megapixel autofocus camera with LED flash, face/smile/blink detection, geo tagging from its a-GPS receiver and a stunning high definition 720p video recording at a movie grade 30fps frame rate.
Again, you can count on your fingers a few handsets with 8 megapixel camera resolution and those with smaller resolution but with 720p video recording. Only the Sony Ericsson Vivaz has both but it only captures video at 24fps.
Other High End Features
The Samsung Beam i8520 is your 3G phone on a tri-band UMTS/HSDPA/HSUPA and a quad band GSM/GPRS/EDGE on the 2G network. WiFi 802.11/b/g/n with DLNA supports hotspot surfing and you get microUSB 2.0 and Bluetooth 2.1 with A2DP for local data transfers. SatNav functionality comes with A-GPS receiver and Google Maps,
Your multimedia experience gets a capable media playback for all the popular media content formats including DivX and Xvid video codes. You get stereo FM ratio with RDS and DNSe for stereo widening and surround sound effects. Your stereo listening options include wired headsets from its 3.5mm headphone jack on wireless from its Bluetooth A2DP support.
You get 15 GB with 512 MB ROM and 384 MB RAM as well as microSD expandability for up to 32 GB.
There's a powerful 1800 mAh li-ion battery that can deliver one of the longest talk times at 14 hours and 630 hours of standby time. It energy-efficient super AMOLED display is helpful in this area. There's no data on battery consumption when using its pico projector but its demo at the MWC didn't seem to suffer that much.
