Samsung Led 46 240Hz
LED TV Set: What is the difference between 120hz and 240 hz? Any significant picture quality?

For example, I am looking at a Samsung 40" UN40B6000 and 46" UN46B6000 HDTV set. Both of them use 120hz frequency. But I noticed that there is another Samsung series that uses 240hz but the price is much greater than a 120hz set. What are the pluses and minus with using both? Should I wait until 240hz is standard with all LED tv sets?

Also can someone explain what does LED backlit LCD mean? Is this a true LED tv or just an LCD tv that has been modified or spruced up to act like an LED tv?

thanks.

The 240Hz simply means that the image on the screen is scanned (drawn) more often. In the 120Hz setup its drawn 120 times/sec, whereas the 240Hz setup its drawn 240 times/sec. In theory the 240Hz option should further eliminate any potential issues of motion blur associated with LCD technology (ghost trails).

But its not always super straight forward to say that 240Hz will be double in its ability to deal with those LCD issues. Because some 120Hz LCDs are a 4 ms response time and their 240Hz counterparts a 8 ms response time. Response time also impacts how the motion blur issue. So there is no straight mathematical figure to saying how much better a 240Hz set actually is.

At 40" or 46" though, 120Hz should likely serve you pretty well. The smaller the screen the less demanding it is to need the "cutting edge" features like 240Hz. But everyone's visual sensitivities are different. If you want to be sure whether or not it matters for you, go to a store, and look at both with your eyes, forget the spec sheet. Have them play something with fast motion (video games, action movie, sports, etc.). Then compare the two options visually for yourself.

Most LCDs are CCFL based. This can, sometimes, in larger sets lead to muted colors, grey blacks, and poor contrast. It also means a bigger TV and more power consumption. With an LED LCD you are able to produce more vivid colors, truer blacks, and deeper contrast. You are also able to create a thinner, lighter TV. And the TV will consume less power. An LED LCD is still an LCD in most regards, but those are the advantages the LED backlight brings to the table. There's no such thing as a "true LED" versus an "LED LCD." They are all "LED LCD" regardless of what the marketing wants to call it.
