tv question, LCD vs LED etc.?
I am thinking about buying a TV today since it is Black Friday, and I needed to know a little more about todays technology. I realize todays technology is the 240 Hz LED TV but is that difference between say a 120 Hz LCD noticeable?
Factors playing into purchase: I am viewing this tv about 15 feet away, thought about getting at least a 40 inch tv, preferably a 46. I was looking at the samsung 46" 120 Hz LCD TV model number: LC46C600
Bottom line, is it worth spending the extra X amount of money to get todays technology or will say last years technology suffice?
An LED TV is still and LCD TV but rather than using a CCFL to backlight the screen it uses LED.
The thing is though there's three types.
1) Edge lit. This makes the TV thiner an consume less power whilst improving blacks/contrast
2) RGB dynamic LED. These are red/green/blue LEDs behind the screen. These give the best image as localised dimming improves contrast/black/white noticeably and also you get an increased colour gamut.
3) Full array LED. This is still a backlit method (as in a standard LCD) but it uses LEDs. There is no localised dimming. Because of this a TV using this method might not necessarily be any better than a standard LCD.
So first question is with the TVs you are looking at which backlight method do they use?
Second question is in the store which looks better TO YOU. It's your TV so ultimately get the one you think has the better picture quality.
Thirdly dont assume all LED TVs are better than standard LCD. A high quality LCD will be better than a cheapo LED lit TV.
